Artist’s Statement:

For the past fifteen months I’ve been making paintings on cement board using acrylic paint, ink, charcoal and spray paint. I enjoy working with hand-cut stencils and fragments of photographic imagery which often form the initial visual hook of a painting, and at the same time the anchor of a composition. Sometimes I will reuse those stencils and images in more than one piece, discovering alternate meanings and relationships.

Working in this way I’m able to play with multiple visual elements; some of them planned and meticulously considered, some of them spontaneous and improvised. Whether it’s texture, gesture, line, or accidental grime, I happily welcome it all.

I’ve always been drawn to the interplay between order and chaos. To the contrast and the drama.

In my work I am busy investigating the dynamic between defined form, energetic release, and the creation of unexpected psychological spaces. One might say that I’m dancing on the thin line between ‘the banal’ and ‘the sublime’; while exploring these aspects of a painting I sometimes discover unexpected fragments of beauty.
